TANDBERG and High Definition Video Conferencing

The wide range of video conferencing customers requires a range of video resolutions. The CEO of a newly merged company, the manager of an outsourced call center, a doctor evaluating test results, and an engineering team reviewing product drawings all have different needs for visual definition – as well as different bandwidth available. TANDBERG’s high definition(HD)-capable systems are designed to provide the flexibility for video users to choose the resolution most appropriate for their application.

The doctor and the engineering team may require crystal clear images in order to make faster, more accurate decisions. The CEO at the desktop may need true-to-live visual communication to unify his organization and be more productive.

To serve these types of customers, TANDBERG systems have HD (720p) capability. With the introduction of the Centric 1700 MXP for the executive desktop, TANDBERG has the broadest range of HD solutions in the video conferencing industry. In addition to the Centric 1700 MXP, TANDBERG offers a PrecisionHD camera, the slim Edge Series (95 MXP, 85 MXP, and 75 MXP models) and the fully integrated Profile Series (8000 MXP, 6000 MXP, 3000 MXP and Maestro MXP models).

TANDBERG’s HD does not require the user to sacrifice the features of the complete TANDBERG Solution. TANDBERG’s HD maintains:

  • Full H.239/dual stream support
  • H.264, multipoint support
  • Security features
  • Integration with external collaboration tools

If you are considering purchasing a High Definition solution, the best way to prepare is to read Questions to Ask When Buying HD Video Systems. (http://www.tandberg.net/products/hd_faq_form.jsp) when evaluating potential vendors.

For those customers that do not require HD, TANDBERG’s systems balance bandwidth and resolution to provide a number of options – termed “Optimal Definition.” For example, the 3G mobile phone user utilizes a small screen and low bandwidth (64kbps). A manager may wish to send and receive presentations in XGA format over higher bandwidth (384kbps) to be displayed on a plasma screen. While bandwidth may be in abundance at the corporate headquarters, it is still a challenge to get 1Mbps or higher at home office or small office sites. Also, 384kbps will always be less expensive than 1Mbps for organizations watching expenditures.

At the low end of the spectrum, mobile systems are utilizing 64kbps and QCIF. This makes sense based on the bandwidth, size of screen and the application (talking heads, no PowerPoint or engineering designs). The majority of the market today is somewhere in between QCIF and HD. A typical corporate standard for business meetings is CIF resolution (352 x 288 pixels) at 256kbps and for sharing presentations, XGA resolution (1024 x 768 pixels or 90% of high definition resolution).

TANDBERG also offers “Enhanced Definition” at 2.5 times CIF resolution, with 488 lines. Using a resolution 2.5xCIF gives a much sharper picture because it uses more of the lines available on a LCD or Plasma screen today.
