For the past two years, 19-year-old Jed Michal has been fighting the battle against cancer.  Though missing out on much of his junior and senior year of high school, he was elected to be the class valedictorian.  However, having just had a bone-marrow transplant the week prior, he was unable to travel home to give his speech.  So when Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska contacted Wire One sales rep, Diane Bettini, she was eager to assist.  Jed is the nephew of one of the nurses at Good Samaritan and a patient at University of Texas MD Anderson in Houston.  Wire One provided a video system so Jed could speak to his graduating classmates face to face from his hospital room.  By having access to this technology, he was able to participate in one of life’s important milestones.

In the past few months, Wire One Communications has partnered with Pfizer to unite families with their loved ones serving in Iraq. The program, appropriately named Operation Phone Home, began with Pfizer’s idea of utilizing their videoconferencing infrastructure to connect deployed troops with their families.

Pfizer partners with Freedomcalls.org, a non-profit organization that establishes partnerships with corporations that are well distributed in their videoconferencing infrastructure.  Freedomcalls.org then coordinates with the military to ensure connectivity in the areas where troops are deployed and provides assistance in locating families who can benefit from the connection.  The program has received enthusiastic support from Pfizer executives: Chairman and CEO Hank McKinnell, Vice Chairman David Shedlarz, and CTO, Chuck Williams.

SMART Technologies, Inc. has issued a recall of all their USB audio system for SMART Board 600 series interactive whiteboards (SBA-NA) that have been shipped prior to May 25, 2006.  The speakers may overheat causing the internal speaker cone to ignite. SMART is actively working with their supplier to determine the cause.
